The Value of Fever

This blog is to do with Art and Health.   Here are ideas which I need to share, even tho there is no picture:-

My Notes, (early 1980s)
from “The Sweeping Wind” by de Kruif.   Sydney Uni Fisher Library, stacks, 576.0924/1
(He also wrote “The Microbe Hunters”, about Louis Pasteur.)
…Fred Banting, Charles Best, Summer 1921.
10 dogs, 8 weeks in lab.  Re insulin.
Toronto surgeon,  he had a hunch to extract a sugar-burning hormone from the pancreas of dogs.
He (WB?)   was a war veteran -  brave, dogged, honest.
Of them, Dr George Minot said “They aren’t deep thinkers, they just stumbled on their discoveries.”
Minot,  pernicious anemia. Old Dr Wright said “Bone marrow cells won’t grow up”.  Lion cubs won’t grow bones – only do so if they are given liver, fat and bones.
Liver increases the growth rate of white mice.  Some  people were given at least 1 lb of liver every day, and none of them died.
“His genius was his insight that what is simple may also be deeply fundamental.”
P 170   “….at last arriving at such a massive confirmation that what had seemed silly, was not.”
Professor Jules Bordet was an immunologist’s immunologist….won Nobel Prize…fame in medicine was esoteric…discovered Bordet-Gengou phenomenom …(Wassermann applied it to test for syphilis)
Bordet lived in a realm above the practical.     Belgium.
P 174   Julius Wagner von Jauregg, psychiatrist, (Vienna)   18 Landesgenichtssrase.
For 30 years, groped on from original observation that feverish infections – like pneumonia or typhoid- seemed to heat mental fogs out of certain crazy people.  He saw naturally contracted fevers – occasional and unaccountable- reverse psychotics of all types back to mental health……reported in 1887 these experiments in a scientific paper in which he recommended that hopelessly crazy people be infected with erysipelas or malaria…….medical world’s reaction was that Wagner-Jauregg must be a bit balmy himself.
Koch’s tuberculin created fever but failed to help psychotics though they did get a good fever…..  ***a few went home sane……tho all were dubiously classified psychotics who might have recovered anyway.

Paresis was one malady which was incurable.  Paralysis led to imbecility and death….the fate of thousands of victims of syphilis (the old rover).
Expt…….69 paretics – tuberculin +…..after 8 years, only 8 had died
69 controls – only 5 were living after 8 years.
1914   86 treated with tuberculin + mercury (1907 – 1909)
26 were still alive in 1914;  7 had returned to work.
In high psychological society, this discovery caused hardly a ripple.  W-J was in a smouldering fury!
Then in 1917   9 paretics were inoculated with malaria.  All were on the way to the madhouse;  no hope.
10 years went by…..3 were completely sane, working!
Then treatment of early paretics  with malaria…..83 out of every hundred were well and working, years later!
This led to sweat machines in the USA……fever inside the patient,  plus treatment with arsenic, for syphilis.
The machine gave up……the heat did it anyway……hot blasts dry air were used.
Finally….29 hours treatment……6 hours fever 105-106oF  ……being substitute for 18 continuous months big doses of arsenic and bismuth).

P 192  rheumatic children…were flown to Puerto Rico….where the Sun  heat mad Strep to vanish! …High protein diet (especially eggs)  helped a lot too.

Poverty leads to death….in a rich country…1930s.

·          My apologies for any confusion in meaning-  I tried to catch essentials….  T.V.

Late 1970s  I had been doing Primal Therapy, having given up my job as a microbiologist.  I just happened to pick up this book in Fisher Library  ( sometimes my hands do the finding all by themselves)   I got the feeling that all this was extremely important – but who to go to with this knowledge?  I have hung on to these bits of paper for decades.
Later I was doing Mahikari (people radiate True Light from the hands) -    it was in my zone of interest.  The Mahikari Teachings say to be grateful for fever.  Fever has the power to melt toxins.  Also give gratitude for- pain has the power to push out toxins
Gratitude itself has great power of production,  so the mind and feelings come into it.

Now Professor Paul Davies, a physicist and cosmologist, presently of the University of Arizona,   is lending his intelligence to the study of cancer-  and he has come across the phenomenon of fever from infection to ease cancer…….
Radio National’s Sunday Profile with Richard Aedy – you might find it online- talked with Prof Davies.
RN’s Science Show with Robin Williams recently broadcast Professor Davies’ lecture at Adelaide University.

RN had a previous program regarding an unusual parasite infecting some people, constant symptoms.  One lady noticed that she only got relief from that suffering when she had a dose of Salmonella food poisoning!
Here is an extract copied from the transcript:-

Fever;  chikungunya

Andreas Suhrbier: There are a very few viruses that cause this kind of protracted disease dominated by these rheumatic symptoms. And why do they do that? Well, the answer is actually reasonably simple; the virus infects cells in the joints, and so the immune response tries to get rid of these infections, and that battle between the virus and the immune system causes inflammation and that causes the disease.
Ian Townsend: The painful arthritis lasted nine months for Topaz Conway. She describes what happened when her symptoms vanished briefly during a bout of food poisoning.
Topaz Conway: Suddenly I felt good and it didn't matter that I had salmonella and was vomiting my guts out, it was more I was absolutely ecstatic and almost giddy from not having the pain in the joints. So on day five when all the symptoms of salmonella went away, the pain came back and that's sort of when I lost the plot and told the doctor, 'You can cut off both my arms and legs because I just cannot live with this pain,' and I was dead serious at the time.

It has been said that Nature finds ways to get rid of damaged individuals in all species-  think of a weak deer being hunted by wolves.   Dr James J Lynch wrote “The Broken Heart” – the medical consequences of loneliness.  It was he who noted the above observation.  His latest book is on Love.
Spiritual teachings all say that the most powerful energy is Love.  It warms the heart……
My feeling is we might be on the cusp of understanding that Everything Matters.  To some extent even the damaged individuals have failsafe mechanisms to heal damaged systems.  Even the “junk” DNA is waiting in the cytoplasm for the moment it may be required to update some genes in response to environmental stimuli……
All is “incredibly interwoven and interconnected -  soul, spirit, mind and body”   (to borrow a few words from Mahikari).
I live in great hope tho sometimes the despair hammers away at me……
